LONG BEACH, California (AFP) The United States, already dominant in the Pan Pacific Championships pool, closed out the meeting Sunday with victories in the men’s and women’s 10-kilometer open water races.
Chip Peterson and Christine Jennings led US one-two finishes in both races. Fran Crippen was second in a fiercely contested men’s race, which came down to a sprint in the final 400m.
Canada?s Richard Weinberger was in the lead with two kilometers to go, having been shadowed by Peterson and Crippen through much of the race in the Long Beach marine stadium, better known as a water skiing venue.
As the race wound down, Peterson broke first and was able to out-touch Crippen and Weinberger at the finish.
Peterson?s winning time was time was 1 hr 56 min 00.02…
